Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve

Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve is located in the strategic confluence region of Western and Eastern Ghats. Sathyamangalam and Hasanur with District headquarters at Erode. 

Sathyamangalam wildlife sanctuary was set up in 2008 while its area was stretched in 2011 to the present area. Having high population of tigers with as many as 54 tigers, it was declared as fourth Tiger Reserve of the state in 2013.

Safari Ride 

With the vehicle safari at Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve (STR) receiving good response from the public, an online booking system has been introduced from this week

.

To promote eco-tourism at STR, which covers a forest area of 1,411.60 sq. km., the Forest department in the name of ‘Vanaporni Nature Education Programme’ introduced safaris on seven routes on weekends from November first week. Visitors will be taken in vehicles inside the forest areas where they can see the animals.

Now, visitors can log on to https://str-tn.org /vanaporni- nature-education- programme to book online.

The site displays the seven routes, photographs and fare.

It also gives details on the forest range, safari route, boarding point, type of vehicle and number of seats.

Visitors can choose the date of safari and check the seat availability and book their seats by making online payments.

Visitors can either book for morning or evening safari, officials said.

Animals Sighting at sathyamangalam tiger reserve

The Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve is the confluence of two distinct geographical regions of bio diversity landscape; Western Ghat and Eastern Ghat. The diversity of habitat has got an assemblage of several species of rare plants, animals, birds, invertebrates, fishes, amphibians, and reptiles.

Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve is about 75 kms from Coimbatore, about 225km from Bangalore, and about 65km from Udhagamandalam (Ooty) by road. Hasanur Division is 23 kms ahead from Sathyamangalam towards Chamrajnagar.

Parts of the Sanctuary is approached by Sathyamangalam-Dhimbum ghat road with 27 hair-pin bends.

The nearest railway stations to Sathyamangalam is Coimbatore, about 75km, Erode about 67km and Chamrajnagar about 40kms, which is the nearest town from Karnataka.

The nearest airports are Coimbatore (80 km) and Bangalore (225km). The nearest town for medical facility, petrol bunks is Sathyamangalam.

Animals

Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve has got a high diversity of fauna, similar to the adjoining protected areas. Notable species other than the Tigers are; Elephants, Gaur, Black Buck, Four Horned Antelope, Mugger, White Backed Vulture, Sloth Bear, wide variety of Deers, Primates, Civets, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fishes and other lower creatures.

Climate and Hydrology

Generally, the plateau region enjoys a mild and equitable climate favourable to vegetation and in particular to sandal trees. The slopes and plains are subjected to hot and dry climate. The average minimum and maximum temperatures are; 21.54o C and 27.02o C in the plateau and the average minimum and maximum temperatures are 26.24 0 c and 32. 84oC in the plains. Thus, the climate of the Sathyamangalam Wildlife Sanctuary is moderate. There is a rainfall gradient from east to west of the sanctuary. The eastern part of the sanctuary falls on the leeward side of the Western Ghats; hence this part receives low rainfall.

River Bhavani

It originates from western catchments of Nilgiris, running through Kerala and again enters Tamil Nadu. This river runs through Coimbatore Division and enters into Sathyamangalam Forests in Bhavanisagar Range. Till it reaches Bhavanisagar dam, it runs along the sanctuary area. This is the main source of drinking water to the wildlife, especially elephants.

 River Moyar

It is another perennial river, which also originates from Nilgiris and runs through sanctuary area and finally flow into Bhavanisagar reservoir.
